Behind the Scenes

Every District, Every Voice: Behind the Making of a Documentary on Nagaland’s Women Candidates

Success Stories

Documentary production goes beyond filming. It involves research, planning, coordination, listening and bringing different perspectives together to create a meaningful narrative

As part of our work at Modern Myriad Branding (MMB), this project offered an opportunity to engage with the process of documenting women’s participation in Nagaland’s Urban Local Body elections. Here is a look at the key stages involved in documentary production.

The Process Behind the Project

  1. Research: Every documentary begins with understanding the subject. Research helps establish context, identify relevant perspectives and provide a foundation for the production process. It also helps guide the questions, direction and approach taken during filming.
  2. Interviews and Coordination: People are at the heart of a documentary. Reaching out to participants, coordinating conversations and creating a comfortable environment are essential parts of the process. Listening carefully and approaching each interaction with respect helps guide the documentation process.
  3. Filming: Filming requires careful planning, coordination and adaptability. From managing schedules to working across different locations, each stage involves logistical preparation and attention to detail to support the production process
  4. Editing Editing brings the different elements of a documentary together. It involves reviewing footage, organising material and developing a coherent narrative while maintaining clarity and consistency throughout the productio\
  5. Production and Documentation: A documentary is the result of several interconnected efforts, from initial research to the final stages of production. Each stage contributes to creating a structured record of the subject and reflects the coordination, planning and work involved behind the scenes.

What We Learned

  1. Research provides Direction: A clear understanding of the subject helps guide the production process, strengthen preparation and ensure that the work begins with a well-defined foundation.
  2. Coordination is Essential: Documentary projects involve multiple people, schedules and logistical requirements. Effective coordination helps bring these elements together and keeps the process organised
  3. Every Stage Matters: From research and interviews to filming and editing, each stage contributes to the final output. Good documentary production depends on the collective effort behind the scenes, as much as the work visible on screen.

At MMB, we value the process behind every project and the opportunity to undertake work that involves research, documentation, coordination and storytelling.
