The challenge. The Department needed to understand what each of Nagaland’s 17 districts produces, which of those products can be exported, and how supply chains currently work. That kind of picture can only come from the ground, directly from the people who grow, collect and sell.
What we did. The project followed a clear process: planning, field data collection, stakeholder consultations and analysis.
- Planned the research. We designed the survey tools and the questions to be asked in every district, so the answers could be compared.
- Went to the ground. Our field teams travelled across all 17 districts and visited villages in person. They spoke directly with farmers, aggregators and local stakeholders.
- Recorded first-hand information. Through interviews and conversations, the teams gathered detailed insights on production practices, exportable products and the existing supply chain systems.
- Documented everything. Field observations were written up, and photos and videos were collected to support the data, so the findings could be checked later.
- Analysed and consulted. We held stakeholder consultations and analysed the data into clear findings.
- Produced the final outputs. We designed and compiled the official export documentation booklet, From Hills to Market: The Compendium, and built a structured digital database alongside it.
The result. Two outputs ready for formal institutional use:
- The Compendium, an official booklet that documents what each district produces and can export.
- A structured digital database to support long-term policy planning and implementation.
Why it mattered. This is one of the largest pieces of work MMB carried out in the year. It joined real village-level conversations to the way government plans, which is the link a state needs if its products are to reach wider markets.
