Guide for Local Food Products

How to build a brand for a local food product in Nagaland

Branding Strategies

A good local product can still lose on the shelf to a better-presented one. Branding closes that gap. This is the order we follow when a food or drink producer asks us for help.

  1. Start with the story, not the logo. Where is it grown or made, by whom, and why does it taste the way it does? Write the answer in three sentences before any design begins.
  2. Choose a name and a look that fit the story. Short names are easier to say, spell and remember. Pick two or three colours and one typeface, then stay with them.
  3. Design packaging for the shelf and for the phone screen. Many buyers first meet a product as a photo on Instagram or WhatsApp, so the pack must read clearly even when small. Sustainable packaging was one of the topics at the packaging, branding and marketing workshop we managed under the RAMP scheme in March 2025.
  4. Get the label right. Food products must follow licensing and labelling rules. Check the current requirements on the FSSAI website (fssai.gov.in) before you print anything.
  5. Find out whether your product can carry a GI tag. Some Nagaland products already hold Geographical Indication status. The Geographical Indications Registry (ipindia.gov.in) lists them.
  6. Show up online, regularly. Photograph the product in real kitchens and real landscapes, and post on a steady schedule.

From our work: For Greymoon Enterprise, a green tea producer, we handled product and logo design, branding, digital marketing and SEO, which increased the brand’s visibility and customer engagement.
