Cyber Safety for Students

Ten habits that protect you

Technology Trends

  1. Use strong, different passwords. Use a long phrase for each important account, and consider a password manager.
  2. Turn on two-step verification. It means a stolen password alone is not enough.
  3. Never share your OTP, PIN or CVV. Not with a friend, and not with a “bank officer”.
  4. Think before you click. Check who sent the message and where the link really goes.
  5. Limit app permissions. Does a game need your contacts, camera or microphone? If not, switch it off.
  6. Review your privacy settings. Do it on every social media account, and opt out of ad tracking where the platform allows it.
  7. Be careful on public Wi-Fi. Avoid banking and password logins on open networks.
  8. Keep your phone and apps updated. Updates fix known security problems.
  9. Deal with cyber bullying calmly. Do not reply. Take screenshots, block and report the account, and tell a trusted adult or teacher.
  10. Pause before you post. Photos, locations and personal details are hard to remove once shared.
